The 2009/2010 season was the 84th year in the existence of the Emmer football club FC Emmen. It was also the club's 25th season in professional football. The club played in the Dutch Eerste Divisie and took part in the KNVB Cup tournament.
FC Emmen entered into a partnership with sc Heerenveen, which gave the new trainer Harry Sinkgraven a large number of rental players from the Eredivisie club who should develop further in his team. However, most mercenaries turned out not to be able to handle the level of the Jupiler League (yet) and partly because of this, FC Emmen seemed to be heading for a dramatic season. The club was in the lowest place for weeks and because the KNVB decided to introduce a relegation scheme before the season, the club seemed condemned to a return to amateur football for a long time. During the winter break, the tasks of director Henk Eising were taken over by Gerrit Volkers, who, in collaboration with a group of major sponsors and Azing Griever, made it possible for various reinforcements to arrive. The danger of relegation was then averted and FC Emmen finished in fifteenth place.
