Ligue 1 (Ligue 1 Uber Eats, after the sponsor) is the highest football division in France organized by the French Football Federation (FFF). Since 1953, the Monegasque football club AS Monaco has also played in the French football championship many times. The twenty participating clubs play a complete competition to determine who can call themselves national champions. The bottom three are relegated at the end of the season and are replaced by the numbers 1, 2 and 3 of Ligue 2.

The league started in the 1932/33 season with the name National. From the 1933/34 season up to and including the 2001/02 season, the league was called Division 1. In the 2002/03 season, the highest football division in France was given its current name.

In the 1992/93 season, the title was technically won by Olympique Marseille. However, after it became known that the game against US Valenciennes-Anzin on May 20, 1993 had been fraudulent, the title was again taken from Olympique Marseille.
