In the administrative area, a few changes were made at AZ in the summer of 2014. Marco van Basten took over from Dick Advocaat as a trainer. Robert Eenhoorn became the new General Manager on 1 October 2014. He succeeded Toon Gerbrands, who left for PSV on July 1, 2014. Alex Pastoor and Dennis Haar became the assistants of Van Basten. Martin Haar was given a different position within the club.
At the end of August 2014, Van Basten suffered from heart palpitations, which were caused by stress, among other things. As a result, he was not present as a trainer at matches against FC Dordrecht and SC Heerenveen. On September 16, 2014, it was announced that Van Basten stepped back and became an assistant trainer. Pastoor became the head coach of the club. However, Pastoor left in total on 18 September 2014. John van den Brom was appointed as the club's new trainer on 30 September.
After the weekend of November 2, 2014, after the eleventh round of play, AZ reached the lowest position in the competition over the entire season. This twelfth place was reached after the 3-3 draw at home against Excelsior. Number of games later at the start of the winter break, AZ reached sixth place. In 2015, AZ no longer reached these and lower places. After the match against Feyenoord was lost on April 5, 2015, AZ seemed to go for the Play-offs for a ticket in the third heat of the Europa League. However, on the last match day, AZ won at Excelsior, and Feyenoord lost at PEC Zwolle, meaning that AZ was still third in the league and therefore directly qualified for the third heat of the Europa League.
In the KNVB Cup, AZ reached the quarterfinals, in which it lost to FC Twente in Enschede.
