In the 2013/2014 season, AZ played in the Eredivisie. The season opened with the match for the Johan Cruijff Scale 2013 in which AZ competed against national champion AFC Ajax as cup winner of the 2012/2013 season. In August, AZ qualified for the group stage of the Europa League through the play-off round. On November 28, AZ qualified for the next round of the Europa League. This allowed AZ to hibernate in Europe. AZ eventually stranded in quarterfinals of the Europa League in which SL Benfica was too strong in two games.
At the KNVB Cup, AZ did not win from Ajax in the semifinal this year, so Ajax qualified for the final. In the field of Eredivisie, AZ reached the 8th place, which was enough to participate in the playoffs for a Europa League ticket. However, after SC Heerenveen was first defeated, AZ FC Groningen proved to be too strong in the 57th and 58th official game of the season. As a result, AZ will not play European football for the second time in eleven years in the 2014/2015 season.
Gert-Jan Verbeek was fired as a trainer on September 29, 2013. On October 20, 2014 Dick Advocaat was back on the bench for the first time as a trainer of AZ. The most notable names in the winter transfers were Maarten Martens who left for PAOK Salonika, and Simon Poulsen who returned to AZ.
