After winning the play-offs for European football in May 2018, Vitesse started the season on July 26 with the first match in the second qualifying round of the Europa League. This away match against FC Viitorul was drawn 2–2. The return was won 3–1 a week later, so that FC Basel was defeated in the third qualifying round. FC Basel lost twice 1–0, ending the Europa League tournament for Vitesse on August 16.
Vitesse played its first competition match on August 12; FC Groningen won 5–1 at home. This was the biggest victory that Vitesse ever achieved in the first round of the Eredivisie. After the last round of the Eredivisie, Vitesse was in 5th place with 53 points; Vitesse therefore qualified for the Play-offs for European football. In the semi-finals, FC Groningen, which finished 8th, was defeated 4–3 over two matches. In the final of the play-offs, FC Utrecht was defeated, which was too strong in two matches (1-3). As a result, Vitesse did not qualify for European football.
