José Marcelo Salas Melinao(Temuco, December 24, 1974) is a former Chilean footballer, nicknamed El Matador, who, together with Elías Figueroa and Iván Zamorano, is considered one of the best footballers from his homeland.
Salas started at the local Deportes Temuco. At the age of 17 he joined Universidad de Chile. The attacker made his debut for this professional club in 1994 and Salas became national champion twice with Universidad. In 1996 Salas left for the Argentinian River Plate, where he stayed for two seasons.
In 1998, Salas moved to Italy, where he played for Lazio Roma (1998-2001) and Juventus (2001-2003). He scored 36 goals in 97 Serie A matches. Salas played an important role in Lazio's 2000 national title with his goals. Via River Plate (2003-2005), Salas returned to Universidad in July 2005.
On November 26, 2008, he ended his career due to persistent injuries.
