The 2013-2014 season of Sparta Rotterdam was the 59th season of the Dutch professional football club since the introduction of professional football in 1954. The club played in the First Division again due to the loss in the play-offs against Roda JC Kerkrade in the previous season .
Head coach Adrie Bogers was fired on December 2, 2013. "Bogers has not been able to bring passion and experience into the game of the Rotterdam club", explained general and technical director Wiljan Vloet. Former player Arjan van der Laan took over the duties of Bogers until the winter break.
His definitive successor was Gert Kruys, who was appointed on 31 December. He came over from amateur club IJsselmeervogels from Bunschoten, at that time the leader in the Topklasse Saturday. The former midfielder previously worked at SC Cambuur, FC Den Bosch, BV De Graafschap and FC Dordrecht. He signed a contract with Sparta until the end of 2015. Under the leadership of Kruys, all home matches were lost in the regular season, and Sparta dropped from fourth to sixteenth place in the Jupiler League. Because Sparta won the first period, the club was still allowed to participate in the play-offs. Despite a very bad second half of the season, Sparta won successively against FC Eindhoven and premier divisionist N.E.C., only to stumble over FC Dordrecht in the third and final round.
In the cup tournament, Sparta lost in the second round to Eredivisionist and defending champion AZ Alkmaar. In Alkmaar, the home team won 4-1, albeit only after extra time, including three goals from Aron Jóhannsson. For Sparta, striker Johan Voskamp scored the only goal in the eighth minute.
At the end of the season, Sparta took the broom through the selection. The Jupiler League club said goodbye to nine players on May 22, four days after missing out on promotion in Dordrecht: Daniel Bessa, Nourdin Boukhari, Jaime Bruinier, Donovan Deekman, Geraldo Antonio, Roald van Hout, Stef Peeters, Kaj Ramsteijn and Geert Arend Roorda.
