RSC Anderlecht started the season as vice champion. Trainer Franky Vercauteren saw strong holders such as Aruna Dindane and Glen De Boeck disappear. De Boeck had decided to end his career after a serious injury. He became Vercauteren's assistant at Anderlecht.
But there were also a lot of newcomers. Goalkeeper Silvio Proto was snatched from La Louvière and Bart Goor returned to the Astrid Park after an absence of four years. In the autumn period, the Argentine attacker Nicolás Frutos was also bought. However, he was only available for the club after the winter break. He oversaw the departure of former top scorer Nenad Jestrović.
After the 2005/06 season, Pär Zetterberg put an end to his career as a football player.
After the winter break, Anderlecht put the midfielders Laurent Delorge and Marius Mitu at the door. They were mentioned in the Zheyun Ye bribery scandal. During their time at Lierse SK they allegedly allowed themselves to be bribed by members of the Chinese gambling mafia. When this news leaked after a television report, manager Herman Van Holsbeeck fired both players.
Despite strong competition from Standard Liège and Club Brugge, Anderlecht once again finished the season as national champions. It was the club's 28th league title. It was exciting until the very end. With two games left on the program, Anderlecht won the highly charged top match against Standard at home. A week later, however, Anderlecht dropped points against AA Gent, which meant that Anderlecht had to fight for the national title until the last match day. Fortunately for Anderlecht, Ghent lent a hand, because the Buffalos went on to win surprisingly on the final day in Liège. Anderlecht themselves gave the title celebration extra shine by beating Zulte Waregem 3-0 at home. The title match was also the farewell to captain Pär Zetterberg. At the same time, ex-Anderlecht player Gert Verheyen also ended his career as a professional football player in Bruges.
Things went less smoothly in the Belgian Cup and Anderlecht were eliminated in the first game by second division team Verbroedering Geel.
The Purple & White qualified for the UEFA Champions League via the preliminary rounds. The Brussels club was not involved in the group stage. Anderlecht only took points for the first time on the last day of play. Anderlecht finished last in the group and could therefore not spend the winter in Europe.
