At the previous European Championships in Switzerland and Austria (in 2008), the Netherlands was eliminated by Russia in the quarter-finals. The national coach was Bert van Marwijk. On June 6, 2012, the Netherlands was fourth in the FIFA world rankings, behind Germany.

The Netherlands lost all three matches in the group stage of the final tournament, ending up last in the group. The Netherlands was immediately eliminated from the 2012 European Championship.
