The 2014 FIFA World Cup was the 20th edition of an international football tournament between the national men's teams of countries affiliated to FIFA. The event took place in Brazil from June 12 to July 13. 32 teams participated. The final was at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The world championship was organized for the twentieth time. After the 1950 FIFA World Cup, this edition was the second time the tournament took place in the country that became world champions five times.
In March 2003, FIFA decided that the tournament would be held in South America. The choice for Brazil was announced on October 30, 2007 in Zurich. There were no opposing candidates in the final vote. Colombia had withdrawn six months earlier and Argentina did the same at the end of 2006. Although Brazil was the only remaining candidate, FIFA president Sepp Blatter had been blunt by stating that a Brazilian candidacy must still meet the required level of quality. If that failed, other candidates from other continents would be considered. In 1978 Argentina was the last South American host country.
The tournament slogan is "All in one rhythm".
