HHC Hardenberg was created in 1954 from a merger between Hardenberg Football Club Hardenberg and SV Heemse from neighboring Heemse. The letters HHC stand for Hardenberg Heemse Combinatie.
The club won its first title, in the Vierde Klasse (Verde Klasse), in the 1964–65 season, earning promotion to the Derde Klasse (Third Division). The club played eleven seasons in that division, winning the title in 1975–76, earning promotion to the Tweede Klasse (Tweede Klasse).
The introduction of the big league changed the structure of the league. The Eerste Klasse (First Division) became the Hoofdklasse, and the Tweede Klasse, where HHC played, became the Eerste Klasse (First Division).
HHC was relegated back to what had become the Second Division after the 1990–91 season. HHC won the play-offs in that division in 1998 and thus secured promotion to the First Division.
In the 2000–01 season, HHC finished second in the First Division E, qualifying for the play-offs. In the play-offs, HHC was close to promotion to the big league. In the 2003-2004 season, HHC tied for first place in the First Division D. A decisive game against Excelsior '31 was lost, but HHC qualified for the play-offs and won both play-off games, making it the first secured promotion to the big league. time in the club's existence.
In its first season at the highest level of amateur football in the Netherlands, the club managed to avoid relegation and finished the season in the Saturday Hoofdklasse C in 10th place (out of 14). In 2005–06, HHC won the third period (period), securing a place in the 2006–07 KNVB Cup.
