In the 2014/15 season, AZ played in the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup. The official season opened with a match against Heracles Almelo in Almelo. AZ did not play at the European level this season because it failed to qualify in the 2013/14 season.
In the summer of 2014, a few changes were made at AZ in the administrative area. Marco van Basten took over from Dick Advocaat as trainer. Robert Eenhoorn became the new General Manager on 1 October 2014. He succeeded Toon Gerbrands, who left for PSV on 1 July 2014. Alex Pastoor and Dennis Haar became Van Basten's assistants. Martin Haar got another position within the club.
At the end of August 2014, Van Basten suffered from palpitations, which were caused by stress, among other things. As a result, he was not present as a trainer at matches against FC Dordrecht and SC Heerenveen. On September 16, 2014, it was announced that Van Basten was stepping back and became an assistant coach. Pastoor became head coach of the club. However, on September 18, 2014 Pastoor left completely. On September 30, John van den Brom was appointed as the club's new trainer.
After the weekend of November 2, 2014, after the eleventh round, AZ reached the lowest place in the league over the entire season. This twelfth place was reached after the 3-3 home draw against Excelsior. A few games later at the start of the winter break, AZ reached sixth place. In 2015, AZ no longer reached these and lower places. After the game against Feyenoord was lost on April 5, 2015, AZ seemed to go for the Play-offs for a ticket in the third qualifying round of the Europa League. However, on the last day of play, AZ won at Excelsior, and Feyenoord lost at PEC Zwolle, making AZ third in the competition and therefore directly qualified for the third preliminary round of the Europa League.
In the KNVB Cup, AZ reached the quarterfinals, in which it lost to FC Twente in Enschede.
