In 1919, the Sporting Club de l'Ouest Angers was founded after the disappearance of the Angers UC club. In 1925, the sports association also had a football department. The club plays in the Stade Raymond-Kopa (until March 2017 called Stade Jean Bouin) which has 18,000 seats. In 1989 the club put Angers before the club name instead of behind it.
The club played at a regional level until World War II. After the war, the club took on the professional status and started in Division 2. The club stayed there with mixed success until 1956, when the club was 1 point behind Stade Rennais UC vice champion and promoted. In the first season, the club already reached the final of the French Cup and lost 6-3 to Toulouse FC. In 1957/58, the club finished fourth, seven points behind champion Stade de Reims and had as many points as numbers two and three. In the following three seasons, the club finished in seventh place two more times and then stayed in the middle bracket for several years until reaching third place in 1966/67. The club was not yet able to play European football because the UEFA Cup did not exist yet and the equivalent at that time, the Jaarbeurs Cities Cup, invited clubs instead of clubs to qualify. The following season was turned off by eighteenth place and a corresponding relegation.
In the second division, the club became clear champion with ten points ahead of AS Angoulême. In 1972/73, the club finished fourth and qualified for the UEFA Cup. East German Dynamo Berlin eliminated the club in the first round. After a fifth and fourth place, the club relegated in 1974/75. Then came shorter and shorter periods in the first. In 1976/77, the club was relegated after one season. From 1979 to 1981, the club played in Division 1 three seasons in a row, but always played in the lower middle bracket. For the rest of the 1980s, Angers played in the middle bracket of Division 2 and started a remonte in the early 90s that resulted in a title in 1993. The elite return did not go as planned and the club finished last. After this, the club could no longer promote. In 1996 the club had to return to the third level for the first time in more than fifty years. Then the club became an elevator crew between the second and third class. In 2007 the club promoted again and finished tenth. The following years the club alternated in the middle bracket and the sub-top.
In 2017, Angers reached the final of the Coupe de France for the second time in club history. In the final it lost 1-0 to Paris Saint-Germain due to an own goal in the injury time of Issa Cissokho.
