The UEFA European Football Championship 2012, commonly called UEFA Euro 2012 or simply Euro 2012, was the 14th UEFA European Men's Football Team Championship organized by UEFA. The finals, which took place between June 8 and July 1, 2012, were organized for the first time by Poland and Ukraine and were won by Spain, which defeated Italy 4-0 in the final at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev (Ukraine).
The offer from Poland and Ukraine was selected by the UEFA Executive Committee on April 18, 2007. The two guest teams qualified automatically, while the remaining 14 finalists from August 2010 to November 2011 were determined in a qualifying game with 51 teams. This was the last European championship to use the 16-team final since 1996. As of Euro 2016, it was expanded to 24 finalists.
Euro 2012 was held at eight locations, four in each host country. Five new stadiums were built for the tournament and, at the request of UEFA, the hosts invested heavily in improving infrastructure such as railways and roads. Euro 2012 set visitor records for the 16-team format, for the highest overall participation (1,440,896) and the average per game (46,481).
Spain was the first team to win two consecutive European championships and three major tournaments in a row (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012). Spain had already won entry to the 2013 Confederations Cup by winning the World Cup, qualifying the runner-up Italy. As with Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, both host countries left in the group stage in 2012.
