The Primeira Liga 2007–2008 was the 74th season in the highest division of Portuguese professional football. The competition started on August 17, 2007 and ended on May 11, 2008.
Defending champion FC Porto won the third national title in a row, the 23rd in total, among other things by 23 hits from the Argentinian top scorer Lisandro López. At the end of 2008, he was named Portuguese footballer of the year. FC Porto was led by trainer-coach Jesualdo Ferreira.
New entrants were Leixões SC and Vitória Guimarães, who were promoted from the Liga Vitalis (2006/07) and, on their return to the highest level, finished in eleventh and third place respectively.
A number of penalties were issued during the season. For example, Belenenses got three points deducted because of the position of a player not entitled to play. FC Porto was penalized with a six-point deduction for a corruption affair from the 2003-2004 season.
For the same reason, União de Leiria got three points deducted and Boavista eventually relegated, although the Porto club finished in ninth place. The result was that the number penultimate, Paços de Ferreira, maintained itself at the highest level.
In the 240 games played, a total of 554 goals were scored, good for an average of 2.31 goals per game. The spectator record was set this season on Saturday December 1 at the SL Benfica – FC Porto match: 60,116 visitors. The Estadio da Luz match ended in a 1-0 win for the visitors and later champion by a goal in the 41st minute of Ricardo Quaresma.
