AZ played in the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup and UEFA Champions League tournaments in the 2009/10 season. AZ also played the match for the Johan Cruijff Shield as national champions. AZ managed to win this match with a victory over cup winner SC Heerenveen (1-5). AZ started the competition on August 2 with a 3-2 defeat against Heracles Almelo, but still managed to finish 5th, which means that AZ is also assured of European football next season. AZ will then have to claim a place in the main tournament via the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
AZ was eliminated in the KNVB Cup by Feyenoord in the eighth finals.
The Alkmaarders made their debut in the Champions League on September 16. They had qualified for this through the championship in the 2008/09 season. She did not manage to progress beyond the group stage, partly due to the famous goal by Standard Liège goalkeeper Sinan Bolat in the last minute of the Standard - AZ match (1-1).
It was an eventful season for AZ. The main sponsor DSB Bank and its parent company DSB Beheer, of which AZ N.V. was a part, went bankrupt on October 19. As a result, Dirk Scheringa had to leave the field as chairman for many years and an uncertain period began for AZ. Afterwards, AZ even appeared to be on the brink of collapse when a solution for the club was not found for a long time and its liquidity was at risk. AZ was forced to sell Ari and Sébastien Pocognoli during the winter break to cope with acute financial problems. As a result, AZ even ended up (temporarily) in category 1, the danger zone, of the KNVB licensing committee. On June 1, when the shares were transferred to the club for one euro (thanks to a group of regional investors), a rescue plan was launched for AZ that was supposed to get the club healthy again within three years so that AZ could stand on its own two feet again. This ensured AZ's continued existence and allowed AZ to face the future with a new structure and new impetus.
