Tijjani Babangida(Kaduna, September 25, 1973) is a former Nigerian professional footballer who played for VVV-Venlo, Roda JC, Vitesse and AFC Ajax, among others. He is the older brother of Ibrahim Babangida and Haruna Babangida, who are also professional football players.
Outside the Netherlands, Babangida also played for Gençlerbirliği SK in Turkey for some time and played the last phase of his career with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, where he ended up via Mido. In March 2005, Tijjani Babangida ended his career due to various injuries. His last club was in 2005 Ittihad Khémisset in Morocco.
He went through his best period in his career in Kerkrade at Roda JC (1993-1996) under coach Huub Stevens and perhaps in his second season at VVV-Venlo, which then played in the First Division. His second season with the team from Amsterdam went quite well, but after that the competition became too great and he mainly sat on the bench.
Babangida was especially praised for his dribbling on the field and his speed as an attacker on the flanks.
Babangida participated in two world championships: in 1998 and 2002.
After his career he was a “special assistant” to the Nigerian national team and a football analyst on Nigerian TV.
