In the 2012/2013 season, Sparta Rotterdam, under the leadership of head coach Michel Vonk (later succeeded on an interim basis by Henk ten Cate), competed for promotion in the Jupiler League (First Division). It was a season full of emotion, in which the club ultimately missed out on promotion via an extremely dramatic conclusion in the play-offs.
