In the 1999-2000 season, Celta de Vigo finished 7th in La Liga and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. The season began with Celta as title contenders until Christmas, but a loss of form in the second half of the season saw them drop down the table.
The team's highlight was a remarkable 4-0 victory against Juventus in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup, though they were ultimately eliminated in the quarter-finals by Lens. Celta earned 53 points with a record of 15 wins, 8 draws, and 15 losses in La Liga. Benni McCarthy was the top goalscorer across all competitions with 16 goals (8 in the league). The team was managed by Víctor Fernández. The season was notable in Galicia as arch-rivals Deportivo de La Coruña won La Liga for the first time.
Juan Velasco Damas, a former Spanish footballer and coach, played as a defender (mainly right-back) for Celta Vigo between 1999 and 2004. He was an important figure in the team that achieved the historic qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
