The club was formed in 1919 after a merger of three clubs (FC Dumfries, KOSB FC & Arrol-Johnston). In 1933 the club played in the highest division for the first time.
The best performance of the club was a fourth place in 1934. In total, the club played twenty seasons in the highest class, in times long gone.
In 2002 the club became champion of the 3rd division and since then they have been playing in second place. In 2005, the club finished fourth, the highest result since World War II. After a lost cup final in 2008 against the Glasgow Rangers, who had already qualified for the Champions League, the club was allowed to enter the UEFA Cup as second division.
In 2012, Queen of the South was relegated again, only to return to the Second Division in 2013 after the Championship in the Second Division.
