During the 1990s, the New York Islanders experienced a stark decline, transitioning from their historic 1980s dynasty into one of the most turbulent and dysfunctional eras in NHL history. Across the decade, the team suffered from poor management, low-performing rosters, and a universally mocked branding pivot. Aside from a single bright spot—a dramatic, underdog run to the Prince of Wales Conference Finals in 1993 led by coach Al Arbour—the Islanders spent most of the '90s at the bottom of the league. The franchise posted a dismal 279-410-97 overall record during the 1990–91 through 1999–2000 seasons, qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs only twice.
