The 2006 World Cup started promisingly: the Netherlands qualified for the group stage undefeated, winning against Serbia & Montenegro and Ivory Coast, after which a draw against Argentina was enough to advance. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16 after a tense match against Portugal (0-1), better known as the "Battle of Nuremberg," in which no fewer than four red cards were received. Sneijder impressed during this tournament with his vision, passing, and game intelligence – qualities that later made him one of the greatest Dutch internationals of all time.
