In 1970, Newcastle United experienced a transition period under long-serving manager Joe Harvey, moving from the heights of their 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup triumph into a more erratic decade. The club completed a highly successful 1969–70 season in May 1970, finishing 7th in the First Division with the second-best defensive record in the top flight, conceding just 35 goals. However, the subsequent 1970–71 season proved much tougher, as the team struggled for consistency and slipped to a 12th-place finish.
