In the 2008/09 season, Sunderland A.F.C. finished 16th in the Premier League, narrowly avoiding relegation, and reached the fourth round in both the FA Cup and the League Cup. The club was managed by Roy Keane initially, who resigned in December 2008 and was replaced by Ricky Sbragia. Roy Keane, who had guided Sunderland to Premier League safety the previous season, resigned in December 2008 following a poor run of results. First-team coach Ricky Sbragia took over, first as caretaker and then permanently, until the end of the season. Notable signings for the season included the arrival of Anton Ferdinand, George McCartney, and Djibril Cissé (on loan). Sunderland sealed their Premier League safety with a crucial 3-2 victory over local rivals Middlesbrough late in the season.
