Rangers FC 1987-1990
The latter half of the 1980s and the early 1990s were a golden age for Rangers FC under manager Graeme Souness. He brought numerous top English players to Ibrox, partly because the Heysel Stadium ban prevented English clubs from playing in Europe. This allowed Rangers to strengthen their squad with established names such as Terry Butcher, Gary Stevens, Chris Woods, and Trevor Steven.
In 1987-1988, Rangers achieved immediate success, winning the Scottish Premier Division, the League Cup, and later several trophies. The team played attacking and physical football during those years, supported by a passionate Ibrox fan base.
The 1988-1990 period again yielded league titles and cups, laying the foundation for Rangers' subsequent dominance in the 1990s. Star player Ally McCoist became a crowd favorite during this period, while newcomers like Mo Johnston (the first Catholic player to transfer from Celtic to Rangers) caused a stir and also achieved sporting success.
In short, the period 1987-1990 was one in which Rangers firmly established themselves, laid the foundations for the "Nine in a Row" streak (nine consecutive league titles in the 1990s), and Ibrox became the scene of a blend of English top quality and Scottish fighting spirit.
