The 2014 Tour took an unexpected turn early on. Defending champion Chris Froome was forced to abandon after several crashes, and Alberto Contador also failed to finish. This paved the way for a new hero: Vincenzo Nibali. The Italian rider from Astana seized the yellow jersey in the second stage after a powerful attack in Sheffield and almost held on to it for the rest of the Tour.
What followed was a spectacular display. On the cobbled stage to Arenberg, Nibali outpaced his rivals in the rain and mud – a stage that many later considered decisive. In the Alps and Pyrenees, he confirmed his status with multiple mountain victories, not only defending the jersey but also demonstrating his superiority.
On July 27, 2014, on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, Nibali proudly wore the yellow jersey across the finish line. He became the first Italian since Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Tour. His victory was a rare feat: with this victory, Nibali completed his trilogy of Grand Tours, having previously won the Giro and the Vuelta.
The 2014 yellow jersey embodied not only leadership but also resilience, class, and the crowning achievement of a champion who managed to dominate the chaos of that Tour.
