After KV Mechelen and RSC Anderlecht, Aad de Mos was tasked with winning trophies with Standard Liège in the 1997/98 season. In May 1997, the Dutchman immediately welcomed two coveted strikers. Brothers Émile and Mbo Mpenza had opted for Standard Liège despite offers from every top Belgian club. But the Rouches didn't stop there. Club icon Gilbert Bodart was brought back after a season with Girondins de Bordeaux, and talented youngsters Zefilho and Dirk Huysmans were poached from reigning champions Lierse. The club also invested in several African youth players, including George Blay, Rabiu Afolabi, and Theo Amuzu. At his former club PSV, De Mos convinced midfielder Björn van der Doelen to move to Liège as well. Meanwhile, Gunther Schepens and Roberto Bisconti, the last players of the generation that had finished runners-up two years earlier, had departed.
