Salpingidis has played 82 international matches and scored 13 times for the Greek national team, including the winning goal in the away match of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine, which qualified Greece for the final tournament. He made his national team debut on August 17, 2005, against Belgium. On June 17, 2010, in a group stage match of the 2010 World Cup against Nigeria, he scored Greece's final World Cup goal with a shot from outside the penalty area that deflected substantially past Lukman Haruna. On 8 June 2012, Salpingidis came on as a substitute and scored Greece's first goal at Euro 2012, in the opening match of a 1-1 draw against Poland, becoming the first Greek player ever to win a title at both the World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. Later, in the quarter-final against Germany, he provided the assist for Giorgos Samaras' goal and also scored the final goal from a penalty against Manuel Neuer. The match ended 4-2, sending Germany through to the semi-finals.
