In the 2013/14 season, AZ Alkmaar had a busy and volatile year, reaching the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League but failing to finish in the top 5 of the domestic league.

Eredivisie: AZ finished in 8th place with 47 points from 34 matches. In the play-offs for European football, they lost in the final to FC Groningen.
UEFA Europa League: One of the highlights was reaching the quarterfinals. After victories over Anzhi Makhachkala, among others, AZ was eventually eliminated by SL Benfica (0-1 at home, 2-0 away).
KNVB Cup: The club reached the semi-finals but was eliminated by Ajax.
Johan Cruyff Shield: The season began with a narrow 3-2 defeat to Ajax.
