During the lockout-shortened 1998–1999 NBA season, rookie Vince Carter completely transformed the Toronto Raptors franchise. Originally drafted 5th overall by the Golden State Warriors, he was immediately traded to Toronto on draft night for college teammate Antawn Jamison. Nicknamed "Air Canada," Carter's spectacular above-the-rim athleticism instantly put Canadian basketball on the map. He won the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year award in a landslide, capturing 95.8% of the available votes.
