The Peruvian national football team is a team of football players who represent Peru at international matches. The South American country plays most of the home games in the Estadio Nacional in the capital Lima.
Between 1970 and 1982, Peru had a golden generation of footballers and La Blanquirroja qualified for three of the four World Cups. The country won the Copa América in 1975. In 1998 Peru came close to qualifying for the World Cup again, but Chile had a better goal balance. The 1982 World Cup was the last tournament for which Peru managed to qualify, until the team led by national coach Ricardo Gareca managed to secure placement for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in the fall of 2017 at the expense of New Zealand.
