During the 1997–1998 "Last Dance" season, Scottie Pippen played a dramatic and pivotal role in helping the Chicago Bulls secure their sixth NBA championship and complete their second "three-peat". Pippen entered the season highly frustrated by a heavily underpaid contract. To voice his displeasure and avoid ruining his summer vacation with rehabilitation, he purposefully delayed surgery on a foot injury suffered during the 1997 playoffs until the start of the regular season. As a result, he missed the first 35 games of the season. During his absence, general manager Jerry Krause actively attempted to trade him, prompting Pippen to publicly demand a trade and sit out even after he was physically cleared to play.
