In the 2001-2002 season, Celtic, managed by Martin O'Neill, were the Scottish Premier League champions, successfully retaining their title with a then-record 103 points.
Celtic had a dominant domestic league campaign, finishing first with a record of 33 wins, 4 draws, and only 1 loss, scoring 94 goals and conceding just 18. They secured the league title with a 5-1 victory over Livingston on April 6, 2002. However, their domestic cup runs fell short of silverware:
Scottish Cup: Lost 3-2 to rivals Rangers in the final. Scottish League Cup (CIS Insurance Cup): Lost 2-1 to Rangers in the semi-finals after extra time. In European competitions, Celtic competed in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time: They were eliminated in the first group stage, despite winning all three of their home matches, including a memorable 4-3 victory over Juventus.
Dropping into the UEFA Cup, they reached the third round but were eliminated by Valencia on penalties (4-5) after a 1-1 aggregate score over two legs.
Henrik Larsson was the top goalscorer across all competitions with an outstanding 53 goals, including 29 in the league, earning him Europe's Golden Boot Award. Other key players included Paul Lambert, Neil Lennon, John Hartson, Chris Sutton, and Stiliyan Petrov.
