The 1995/96 season is still etched in the memory of many Manchester United fans because of the infamous damp Umbro away shirt. United had won four matches in a row – including a 3-1 defeat to Southampton – leading Sir Alex Ferguson to have it replaced at halftime because players couldn't see each other properly. The shirt was immediately burned, but instead became a legendary piece of football history.
This season, a young David Beckham temporarily made his breakthrough. Wearing number 24, he played a huge part in the starting lineup and stood out with his passing, free kicks, and scoring ability. Along with other talents from the "Class of '92," such as Scholes, Giggs, and the Nevilles, Beckham had a stellar year.
Manchester United achieved the double (Premier League + FA Cup), and Beckham played a crucial role. It was the start of his illustrious career, which would lead him to international fame with Real Madrid, the LA Galaxy, and as the figurehead of the England national team.
