The 2006 World Cup started promisingly: the Netherlands qualified for the group stage undefeated, winning against Serbia & Montenegro and Ivory Coast, after which a draw against Argentina was enough to advance. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16 after a tense match against Portugal (0-1), known as the "Battle of Nuremberg," in which no fewer than four red cards were received. Robben showed his class in Germany with his speed and threat from the wing and later became an icon of the Dutch national team.
