The Italian cycling team Lampre–Fondital started in 2006 as one of the strongest teams in the professional peloton. Under the leadership of manager Giuseppe Saronni, the team built on its long tradition in cycling. With riders like Damiano Cunego, the 2004 Giro winner, and the experienced sprinter Alessandro Petacchi (briefly on the team that season), Lampre boasted a balanced selection of climbers and sprinters. In the Grand Tours, Cunego was the undisputed leader, with ambitions for the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, while riders like Marzio Bruseghin and Tadej Valjavec also played important roles in the mountain stages.
That year, the team wore the recognizable pink and blue Lampre jersey, complemented by the name of its new co-sponsor, Fondital, an Italian manufacturer of heating systems. Lampre–Fondital achieved several victories in stage races and classics in 2006, confirming its reputation as a fixture in the UCI ProTour.
