Arsenal FC finished third in the 1996/97 Premier League season, the club's highest position since the Premier League's inception in 1992/93. They finished four points behind reigning champions Manchester United. However, the season is particularly memorable because Arsène Wenger made his debut as Arsenal's head coach on October 12, 1996. Wenger would remain in the Arsenal dugout for 22 years and later won several trophies with the club. In his first season, Wenger failed to win any silverware. Arsenal were eliminated early in the FA Cup, just as they had been in the previous two seasons, and the London side were also quickly eliminated in the League Cup. In both cases, the final destination was the fourth round. Arsenal also went out in the first round of the UEFA Cup and again failed to add a trophy to their trophy cabinet. Patrick Vieira was Arsenal's top signing of the summer, after failing to thrive at Italian side AC Milan.
