Although Luxembourg is known as a small country with limited sporting traditions outside of football and cycling, it does have its own national rugby team. The Luxembourg Rugby Federation (Fédération Luxembourgeoise de Rugby) was founded in 1973, and in the decades that followed, the country slowly but surely established itself within the European rugby community.
The Luxembourg national team is affiliated with Rugby Europe, the European rugby union federation, and generally plays in the lower divisions of the tournament system. Nevertheless, the country has developed into a respectable competitor at this level. The team consists largely of amateur players, often with international backgrounds – Luxembourg is, after all, a melting pot of nationalities.
Luxembourg plays its home games at Stade Josy Barthel in Luxembourg City or at smaller stadiums throughout the country. The kit is traditionally red, white, and blue – the national colors.
Although Luxembourg has never competed in a Rugby World Cup, the national team has achieved some strong results over the years in the Rugby Europe Conference divisions, and is known for its commitment, team spirit and growing popularity of rugby in a small country where football reigns supreme.
