De competitie bestaat uit twintig clubs die tussen augustus en mei in totaal 38 wedstrijden spelen. Naast Engelse clubs kunnen ook clubs uit Wales zich kwalificeren voor een plaats in de Premier League, maar daarvoor moeten zij wel deelnemen aan de Engelse voetbalpiramide. Er bestaat een promotie- en degradatieregeling tussen de Premier League en de Football League.
Buiten Engeland wordt vaak naar de competitie gerefereerd als de Engelse Premier League (EPL).
