The club was created in 1946 from a merger between Sampierdarenese, a club named after the Sampierdarena district in Genoa, and Andrea Doria, a club named after Andrea Doria, a hero of the Genoese independence. The nickname blucerchiati ("blue-ringed") comes from the uniform, which consists of a blue shirt with a white-red-black-white horizontal stripe on top. The club's logo features a black silhouette representing the face of a typical stylized Ligurian fisherman with beard, characteristic cap, pipe and hair in the wind, a Baciccia. Home matches are played in the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, alternately with fellow townsman Genoa.
In the first forty years of its existence, Sampdoria regularly shuttled between Serie A and Serie B. Its greatest successes reached the club from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. During this period, the Coppa Italia was seized four times, in 1990 the club won the European Cup II and in 1991 the Italian championship was won with players such as Roberto Mancini and Gianluca Vialli. A year later, the Blucerchiati lost the final of the European Cup I to FC Barcelona.
After this heyday, the Genoese fared less well; in 1999, the club even relegated to Serie B, only to return to the top division in 2003. In the 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 seasons, eighth and fifth place respectively were achieved. In the 2005/2006 season, the club played in the UEFA Cup, but did not survive the group stage. The competition started promisingly but ended dramatically with a run of thirteen games without a win and a 12th place in the final ranking. In the 2008/2009 season, the club did not get further than a disappointing 13th place, but the road to success seems to have been taken as the Blucerchiati is the revival of the 2009/2010 season with a promising 4th place in Serie A. Sampdoria was still allowed to participate in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League and the Europa League at the start of the 2010/11 season, the team from Genoa could not avoid being relegated to Serie B with one match day to go. the club back.
