Klaus played in youth for SV Bösensell, SC Weismain, SCW Obermain, 1. FC Lichtenfels and SpVgg Greuther Fürth. On November 6, 2010, he made his debut for the latter club in the first team, against MSV Duisburg. He came onto the field a few minutes before the whistle. On January 23, 2011, Klaus scored the only goal against FC Union Berlin. Klaus played 62 league games for SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the 2. Bundesliga, scoring six times.
In May 2013, it was announced that Klaus switched to SC Freiburg, which finished number five in the Bundesliga the previous season. Klaus signed a four-year deal and made his debut at both the highest level in Germany and in the UEFA Europa League. In his first season, he finished fourteenth in the Bundesliga with his teammates. The following year, a seventeenth place followed and relegation.
Klaus did not descend with Freiburg to the 2. Bundesliga, but signed a contract in June 2015 until mid-2019 with Hannover 96, the number thirteen of the previous season.
