The 2010 FIFA World Cup was the 19th edition of an international football match between the national men's teams of countries affiliated to FIFA. The event took place from June 11 to July 11, 2010 in South Africa. It was the first edition to be organized on the African continent.
South Africa was chosen over Morocco and Egypt as host countries in an all African selection process. An extensive qualification process and the automatic qualification of the host country left 32 countries for the final tournament, which was played in ten stadiums across South Africa. The qualifying countries were divided into 8 groups of four teams in December 2009. The numbers 1 and 2 of each group advanced to the final rounds, which were played according to a knockout system.
The final of the World Cup was played on July 11, in Soccer City in Johannesburg, between the Netherlands and Spain. After extra time, Spain won 0-1 with a goal from Andrés Iniesta; the country thus became world champions for the first time in its history. After 1974 and 1978, the Netherlands lost the final of the World Cup for the third time in its history.
