After the 2014/15 season, in which Real Madrid missed the title, cup and Champions League, coach Carlo Ancelotti was fired. However, Ancelotti himself had indicated that he wanted to stay and star player Cristiano Ronaldo also hoped for an extended stay from the Italian. The names of Rafael Benítez, Jürgen Klopp, Julen Lopetegui and José Mourinho were mentioned as possible successors to Ancelotti.[4] On June 3, 2015, Rafael Benítez, who had previously been a Real Madrid youth coach, was introduced as the new head coach. The Spaniard was allowed to compose his technical staff himself. Antonio Gómez and Fabio Pecchia became his assistants, while Xavi Valero became responsible for the goalkeepers.
During the summer months, Real tried to buy goalkeeper David de Gea. After long negotiations with his employer Manchester United, a transfer did not come to fruition. Real later blamed Manchester United for acting too slowly, the English club claimed that Real was frightened and had ended the negotiations themselves. De Gea himself had an agreement with Real for a six-year contract.
