The 2000 UEFA European Football Championship, also known as Euro 2000, was the eleventh UEFA European Championship, a football tournament held every four years and organized by UEFA, the sport's governing body in Europe.
The final tournament was played between June 10 and July 2, 2000 and was jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, the first time the tournament was held in more than one country. Spain and Austria also offer to host the event. The final tournament was contested by 16 countries; with the exception of the hosts, Belgium and the Netherlands, the finalists had to go through a qualifying tournament to reach the final stage. France won the tournament by beating Italy 2-1 in the final, via a golden goal.
The final was the first major UEFA competition at the King Baudouin Stadium (formerly Heysel Stadium) since the events of the 1985 European Cup Final and the Heysel Stadium disaster, with the opening game played in the rebuilt stadium.
A high scoring tournament with many exciting matches and a very high level of play, Euro 2000 is often cited by football writers as one of the greatest international tournaments ever
