The 1989-90 season was the 98th season in the existence of Liverpool F.C., and their 28th consecutive year in the highest flight. This article covers the period from 1 July 1989 to 30 June 1990.
Liverpool ended the season as the champion for the 18th time and was looking forward to another double, but was only eliminated in the final stages of the third season - this time with a dramatic 4-3 semi-final defeat to an Aan Crystal Palace They had 9-0 in the competition earlier in the season. They ended the season nine points ahead of second prize winning Aston Villa in the competition, but were confronted with a stiff challenge from Villa from neighboring Everton for much of the season and earlier in the season.
The fall of 1989 saw the departure of striker John Aldridge to Spain. Aldridge lost his place in the basic line-up of a reviving Ian Rush, who had returned to the club a year earlier after an unfortunate season in Italy. Defender Jim Beglin, who was plagued by injury, was transferred to Leeds United just before the start of the season, with the defense strengthened by the arrival of Swedish star Glenn Hysén.
