The 2016/17 season was KAA Gent's third consecutive season with Hein Vanhaezebrouck as coach. Unlike the previous season, Ghent could no longer retain the three most important players: Laurent Depoitre left for FC Porto, Sven Kums for Watford (which immediately loaned him to Udinese) and Matz Sels for Newcastle. Benito Raman (Standard Liège), Rafinha (HJK Helsinki) and Mbark Boussoufa (Al-Jazira Club) also left. Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Rinne (Örebro SK) had to compensate for the departure of Matz Sels. French striker Jérémy Perbet, top scorer in the Belgian league last season, exchanged Charleroi for Ghent. Winger Dieumerci Ndongala also came to Ghent from Charleroi. Nigerian Anderson Esiti (Estoril) strengthened the central midfield. Peter Balette returned to Ghent as second trainer after a year at KRC Genk.
