The Netherlands was one of the participating countries at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. It was the eighth participation for the country. Including the 2006 edition, the Netherlands participated for the fourth time in the last five editions. The Netherlands stranded in the eighth final of the 2006 World Cup by losing to Portugal. The Netherlands finished fourth at the Soccer World Cup 1998.
Robin van Persie(Rotterdam, August 6, 1983) is a former Dutch professional football player who played as a center forward, shadow striker, midfielder or winger. Between 2001 and 2019, he played for Feyenoord, Arsenal, Manchester United, Fenerbahçe and again Feyenoord. Van Persie is known as a technically gifted football player and is praised for his passing actions and kicking technique.
Van Persie played in youth at Excelsior and Feyenoord and made his official debut in the first team with the latter in 2002. That same year he won the UEFA Cup with Feyenoord and was named Dutch Talent of the Year. In 2004 he moved to Arsenal, where he won the Community Shield and the FA Cup in his first season. In his remaining seven seasons with The Gunners, he took 'only' personal titles such as the Premier League Golden Boot as top scorer and best player of the year 2011/2012.
Van Persie left for rival Manchester United in the summer of 2012. In his first season at Old Trafford, he captured the English league title and finished as top scorer of the Premier League for the second time in a row (26 goals). After the departure of figurehead Alex Ferguson as manager, both Van Persie and Manchester United had two disappointing seasons.
Van Persie made his debut in the Dutch national team in June 2005. He became captain and top scorer of all time in 2013. He represented the Netherlands at three world championships (2006, 2010 and 2014) and two European championships (2008 and 2012).
On May 12, 2019, he played his last game as a professional football player in the Dutch Eredivisie with Feyenoord against ADO Den Haag (0-2).
