The UEFA European Football Championship 2008, commonly called UEFA Euro 2008 or simply Euro 2008, was the 13th UEFA European Football Championship, a four-year football tournament contested by European countries. It took place from June 7-29, 2008 in Austria and Switzerland (both hosted the tournament for the first time).
The tournament was won by Spain, which defeated Germany 1-0 in the final. Spain was only the second nation to win all of their group stage games and then the European Championship itself - a feat matched by France in 1984. Spain was also the first team since Germany in 1996 to win the tournament unbeaten.
Greece was the defending champion who entered the tournament and won UEFA Euro 2004. They booked the worst finish in Euro 2008, lost their three group matches and collected the least prize money. In 31 games, the participating countries scored a total of 77 goals, the same as the previous tournament.
Austria and Switzerland automatically qualify as hosts; the remaining 14 teams were determined by qualifying games, which started in August 2006. As European champion, Spain earned the right to compete in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa.
