Season 2002/2003. Played 34 games, won 12, drew 11, lost 11. 47 points. Goal difference: 49 - 49. Final score: eighth. This is the story that belongs to the 2002/2003 season.
Foeke Booy makes his debut as head coach with John van Loen as assistant. The first match of the competition is Ajax - FC Utrecht (3-1). A loaded duel through the offside goal of Wamberto in the cup final in me.
Very strong at home
The season is like many seasons. At home FC Utrecht is difficult to beat, no victories on foreign soil. Finnish international Paulus Roiha is disappointing, but with his goal on November 10 in Waalwijk against RKC, he ensures the first away victory since April 14 of that year. After 10 months without a defeat in their own stadium, PSV lost 1-3 on December 8.
A majestic highlight concludes the season. In their own Kuip, Feyenoord is defeated in the cup final 4-1. The outstanding Dirk Kuijt scores twice. Jean Paul de Jong opens the score. A day later, 40,000 fans are present for the tour through the city in a double-decker bus. In the stadium, 20,000 spectators cheer the players on.
FC Utrecht has reached the final battle by winning the eighth final against De Graafschap (2-3). In the quarterfinals against Excelsior is won 3-1. The semi-final in Galgenwaard stadium against PSV (2-1) is a thriller. In a fantastic match the hits are made by Stefaan Tanghe and Dave van den Bergh.
