The 2007/2008 season of FC Groningen started on Monday, July 2, 2007, when the selection came together for the first training. FC Groningen played this season in the Dutch Eredivisie and also in the European cup tournament UEFA Cup. On August 1, 2007, trainer Ron Jans announced the club's goals for the 2007-2008 season: Groningen wanted to finish in the first nine of the Eredivisie, reach at least the second round of the UEFA Cup and the quarterfinals of the KNVB cup tournament. The 2007/2008 season went well at FC Groningen, especially against the top clubs, the team did very well. With a 2-2 draw against Ajax, a 3-2 victory at home against Feyenoord and a 2-1 victory at home against PSV, the team gained a lot of confidence and discipline.
A black day in the 2007-2008 season was April 13, 2008, when the tribune fire took place in the Euroborg.
In the UEFA Cup, FC Groningen was eliminated in the first round by ACF Fiorentina. After becoming 1-1 in both the home and away games, Groningen lost after penalties. In the KNVB cup FC Groningen lost in the third round in De Kuip van Feyenoord. The first half of the season went well in the Eredivisie, but in the winter break, basic players Nevland, Lindgren and Silva are sold. Partly because of the many injuries in the second half of the season, the club lost many matches and Groningen finished in seventh place in the Eredivisie. This means that the Groningers will play in the playoffs for a UEFA Cup ticket, in which FC Utrecht will be defeated in the first round. In the second round, NEC is the opponent. NEC proved to be too strong in 2 games and so this season was missed next to a European ticket.
FC Groningen decided to continue with trainer Ron Jans even after this season. The club reached an agreement with him in September 2007 about a two-year extension to his contract expiring in the summer of 2008. Jans succeeded Dwight Lodeweges in October 2002 and is the longest-serving trainer in the Eredivisie.
Until now, Jans' contract has been extended by one year, but a two-year commitment has now been opted for. "We are far from tired of each other and knowing that a special trainer and human has been working in Euroborg for at least two more years is a reassuring thought for us," said managing director Hans Nijland. "Besides that he achieves excellent results on the field, Jans with his appearance fits perfectly with this club."
